Restoration

RESTORATION
From left to right, click on each picture for a full view of the restoration process.
While still inverted, we have stripped the tacks from the front and are not really surprised when we fond that someone has covered over a previous re-upholstery job. Do notice the moss used as padding. After removing and de-oderizing it, we will re-use it.
Here the sofa is rightside up. Notice how, after loosening the cover, that the springs pop up through the rotted burlap, pushing up the moss padding.
"Patch tying" a spring is not a good idea, although it does have a place where it was previously retied poorly. Notice the white strings that they patched this with; it is Nylon which stretches and defeats the purpose of making a good, strong tie. We prefer to use the original oiled hemp twine.

Our findings show that this sofa has been re-upholstered at least three times. Notice the white reference line on the left arm of the sofa. See how the arm is pulled in?

Bare frame in very good condition considering its age.

Notice the springs are tied front to back, side to side and diagonally both ways. 8 knots are tied on every spring. This is where the term "8 way hand tie" comes from. It is by far the best spring system available.

At this stage we have stripped, cleaned, oiled, checked and repaired the glue joints, re-webbed and are beginning the process of rebuilding the sofa. You have to start with a good foundation.

Here we are fastening the coil springs to the jute webbing. The tool we are using will clinch down the springs to the webbing. These fasteners have very sharp points, so never run your hands underneath the piece of furniture.
